The Square Club

Bristol’s most stylish hidden-gem wedding venue

Romantic portrait of two brides embracing on the spiral staircase wrapped in fairy lights at The Square Club Bristol.

Hidden in the heart of Clifton, The Square Club is a moody, romantic townhouse filled with velvet, art, and warm candlelight. Therefore, it’s the dream spot for couples who love city vibes, good food, and a wedding that feels effortlessly stylish, not traditional.

It’s perfect for intimate celebrations full of personality, laughter, and late-night cocktails. In particular, if you’re picturing something relaxed yet elegant, this is your place.

As a Bristol wedding photographer, I’m drawn to its atmosphere, every corner glows differently, from the golden courtyard to the vintage bar. Indeed, it’s a venue that tells its own story, and that’s what keeps me coming back.

To illustrate, this guide will show you what makes The Square Club one of Bristol’s most unique and love-filled wedding venues.

What I Love About Photographing Weddings at The Square Club

The Square Club has quickly become one of my favourite Bristol wedding venues: it’s intimate, creative, and full of character. Tucked away in Clifton’s elegant Berkeley Square, it blends Georgian charm with modern, moody elegance. Moreover, velvet sofas, warm lighting, and art-covered walls create a romantic, city-chic atmosphere that photographs beautifully.

What I love most is how effortlessly stylish it feels: perfect for couples who want a celebration that’s relaxed, soulful, and full of personality rather than tradition. Indeed, every corner offers a different story, from the ivy-draped courtyard to the cosy cocktail bar that glows at night.

Planning tips

Here are a few insider notes couples always appreciate:

Vendor Access: Since the venue is in a historic Georgian building, load-in is via the main entrance or side stairs. Therefore, if you’re bringing in larger décor pieces, band gear, or floral installations, it’s smart to allow extra setup time.

Parking: As with many city venues, parking in Clifton can be tricky. However, the West End Car Park on Jacob’s Wells Road is your most reliable option. Alternatively, you can encourage guests to use taxis or stay in nearby hotels within walking distance.

Ask about exclusivity: The Square Club also functions as a restaurant and bar. Because of this, it’s worth confirming whether your event will have exclusive access to all areas, or if some spaces might remain open to the public at certain times.

Lighting: The venue’s moody aesthetic looks amazing in photos. However, it can feel quite dim during dinner. To keep the atmosphere romantic and functional, consider adding candles or low-level uplighting, your stylist can help you strike the right balance.

Timeline tip: Whenever possible, plan your key portraits around golden hour in the courtyard or early evening indoors. That’s when the light becomes soft, warm, and cinematic: exactly what this venue does best.

Rules to note: Candles are typically allowed as long as they’re in contained holders. However, open flames outdoors and confetti may have restrictions. To be safe, always confirm these details with your coordinator ahead of time.

REal wedding story

There’s something about The Square Club that feels almost theatrical, every moment unfolds like a scene.

One memory I’ll never forget is Rebecca and Kharla’s wedding. They stepped into the courtyard just as the fairy lights blinked on, framed by ivy and that glowing “Secret Garden” sign. The laughter quieted, the air felt still, and for a moment it was just them, radiant in that amber light. No posing, no staging, just pure connection.

That’s what this space does best, it invites emotion, intimacy, and a little magic without forcing it.

If I had one tip for photographers: let the venue lead. Don’t overpower the mood. Use reflections in the bar, lean into the shadows, and shoot wide to capture its texture and tone. Bring a fast lens, and trust the light.

Best Photo Spots at The Square Club

From a photographer’s eye, The Square Club is a dream. Every corner feels alive, from the reflections in the cocktail bar to the soft shadows under the garden lights. Altogether, it’s a space that invites creativity and rewards attention to detail. To illustrate, here are my favourite portrait spots, along with a few tips to make the most of them:

The Courtyard

Tucked behind the townhouse, The Square Club’s ivy-covered courtyard is one of its most iconic features. Despite being in the heart of Clifton, it feels like a hidden escape. As soon as you step outside, you’re wrapped in warm brick walls, fairy lights, and that signature Secret Garden glow. Altogether, it creates a cinematic backdrop that’s both romantic and relaxed. Whether you’re stealing a quiet moment under the stars or slipping away for golden hour portraits, this space always delivers.

Berkeley Square Gardens

Just steps from the venue, Berkeley Square Gardens is a hidden gem for soft, natural portraits in the heart of the city. Tucked away behind Clifton’s Georgian townhouses, it’s a quiet, tree-lined park surrounded by elegant architecture, making it perfect for couples who want a quick escape from the buzz of the venue without losing that signature Bristol charm. Whether you’re planning first looks, pre-ceremony portraits, or simply need a moment to breathe, this spot works beautifully. What’s more, the natural light here is gentle and flattering, especially during spring and summer when the trees are in full leaf.

Inside the Club

If you love a little drama in your photos, the interiors of The Square Club are a dream come true. With moody, ambient lighting, plush velvet furniture, vintage art on the walls, and a glossy bar full of reflections, this space invites more editorial, intimate portraits. The curved staircase makes a statement for elegant full-length shots, while the tucked-away lounge corners are ideal for quiet, candle-lit portraits. The bar, in particular, offers bold contrast and atmosphere, perfect for those cinematic couple photos that feel like they belong in a magazine.
