Castle Garden Bazaar Wedding
Adri & Gábor
Adri’s dad cried before she even reached the altar.
It was an early September Saturday in Budapest, and Adri and Gábor had chosen St Stephen’s Basilica for the ceremony and Castle Garden Bazaar for everything that came after. I’d photographed enough Hungarian weddings to know this would be a big one, and I still spent half the ceremony with a slight lump in my throat.

A Ceremony at St Stephen’s Basilica
The Basilica does something to people. The scale of it, the candles, the marble, the gold. It quiets a room without anyone telling it to. Adri walked in with her veil trailing the length of the red carpet, and Gábor turned around, and you could see his whole face change.
The dad-crying moment happened during the blessing. Quietly, off to the side, the way real grief and real joy usually arrive.

From the Basilica to Castle Garden Bazaar by Limo
After the ceremony, we piled the bridal party into a white stretch limo and drove across Budapest to Castle Garden Bazaar (Várkert Bazár, if you’re Googling). At some point, someone turned the laser lights on inside the car, and the whole back of the limo became a small disco. There are photos of Adri laughing with her bouquet against red and green stars covering everyone. They are some of my favourites from the day.

The Details They Made Themselves
Adri and Gábor are detail-oriented people. The reception at Castle Garden Bazaar had a fern-and-greenery table plan, with each guest’s name written on a little flag stuck into a potted plant. They set up a lemonade stand for the guests, made jars of homemade marmalade as favours, and had a fingerprint guestbook so every guest left a small mark on a single page. Photos from their relationship were tucked between the leaves of the planters near the DJ, which meant people kept stopping mid-conversation to look at them.

The Dog That Found Them
While we were doing a couple of portraits in the gardens, a couple wandered past with a very fluffy dog. They recognised Adri and Gábor and asked if we wanted to take a few photos with him. Adri and Gábor are both dog people. It was one of the easiest, most natural moments of the whole day, and the photos look it.
